Wednesday’s training session saw FC Barcelona welcome three injured players back to group training as Raphinha, Marc Bernal, and Andreas Christensen all returned to work with the squad.

It was a notable moment, particularly in the case of Christensen, who has been out for over four months due to a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.

Christensen can play if Flick needs him

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Christensen is available to play normally in the remaining five matches of the season if Hansi Flick considers it appropriate.

This is because Barcelona did not use the salary freed by his long-term injury to register Joao Cancelo, who arrived as a reinforcement during the winter transfer window.

The classification of Christensen’s injury as long-term did not affect the club’s available financial fair play margin. It only resulted in an insurance payout due to the injury.

So, depending on how he trains in the coming days, Christensen can still play for the Catalans in La Liga this season, if the manager sees it fit.

As things stand, though, the 30-year-old Dane’s involvement for this weekend’s clash against CA Osasuna is ruled out.

Future uncertain

Barcelona have offered Christensen a contract renewal, which he initially rejected, as it involves a reduction compared to his current salary.

The Blaugrana intend to reward his time at the club despite his contract nearing its end, and even though he is not considered an integral player.

Christensen, for his part, remains hopeful of reaching an agreement over a new contract and continuing at the Spotify Camp Nou for at least another year.
