Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland are overhauling their goalkeeping department as part of a club-wide modernisation.

Posts are being advertised for coaches across the under-21s and under-13 to under-18 groups at the Academy of Light.

Neil Cutler is leading the restructure, with Jonny Maddison set to become his assistant. Further full-time and part-time roles are being considered.

Cutler, 49, previously coached at Wolves and worked with Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa. He is central to first-team and academy provision.

Maddison, 31, is a former Sunderland youth and was part of Leicester City’s Premier League title-winning group.

The goal is a complete, joined-up programme, reflecting Premier League and European demands. Florent Ghisolfi is understood to be driving higher academy standards, with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus keen for a Premier League-level set-up.

Respected coach Mark Prudhoe, 62, is expected to receive support so his workload is properly managed. The plan is for him to oversee younger age groups and assist with loans and scouting, having helped develop Jordan Pickford.

Goalkeeper Simon Moore provides experience around a young senior group, feeds back directly to Cutler and is progressing his coaching badges. That influence underpinned his one-year extension.

A goalkeeping-specific sports science specialist has joined, delivering tailored work on power, movement, recovery and injury prevention. Table tennis is used for hand-eye benefits and team cohesion.

Pete Jameson, 33, is expected to take a part-time youth role, with details to be finalised. More additions are anticipated, building on a pathway that has produced Anthony Patterson, Matty Young and, historically, Pickford.
