Régis Le Bris faces a new test next season, balancing Europa League demands with his preference for stability as Sunderland pursue more history.
According to Sunderland Echo, after the campaign he said European football can cost teams 10 Premier League points, adding, "It's not boring".
Methodical preparation and calm have defined his tenure. He is the first Sunderland boss since Steve Bruce to lead the club into a third full season.
This may not top winning promotion without parachute payments or staying up as a newly promoted side, yet the calendar will test him differently. Europa League fixtures will squeeze recovery and training, so he must trust a deeper squad and use changes earlier to protect his core. Through winter the Black Cats will often play twice a week, cutting analysis time.
Le Bris put real weight on the run-in, arguing it would frame their next steps. The response encouraged him, with players chasing Europe and producing some of their most attacking football.
Many feel last autumn's overperformance against the data could invite second-season syndrome, yet there are signs he has started the team’s next phase. He knows fortunes turn quickly and expectations have risen, but dismissing his prospects of more history would be rash.
