An Instagram post related to Kosovo is causing a stir at FC Bayern. Midfield prospect Erblin Osmani has received a passport from the Republic of Kosovo. However, it remains to be seen whether the 17-year-old will actually play for his parents’ home country in the future.

Erblin Osmani is considered a major talent at FC Bayern. Now, an Instagram post involving the 17-year-old midfielder is sparking discussion—especially within the DFB.

Dr. Faruk Ajeti, Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Germany and Denmark, posted a photo with Osmani last Friday. In the photo, he is presenting the Bayern prospect with a Kosovar passport.

Ajeti wrote: “It is a special honor that today I was able to present the Republic’s passport to our Bayern talent Erblin Osmani and announce some great news for Kosovar soccer: Erblin will play for Kosovo!”

This statement is causing a stir at the DFB. Osmani was born in Germany and has so far played exclusively for the German junior national teams. As recently as January, he took the field for the German U-17 team in two friendly matches against Portugal.

A decision has apparently not yet been made

Contrary to the Kosovar ambassador’s statement, however, Osmani has reportedly not yet made a final decision, according to information from BILD. Neither the player himself nor his management has commented publicly on the matter so far.

The Kosovar passport merely gives the Bayern prospect the option to play for the national team of his parents’ country in the future. A final decision on his international future has therefore not yet been made. More clarity could emerge as early as the international break at the end of September.

For the DFB, the departure of this talented player would undoubtedly be a bitter blow. Osmani is considered one of the greatest German talents of his age group. At FC Bayern, the defensive midfielder has already been training regularly with the first team and made his Bundesliga debut in March in a 4-0 win over Union Berlin.

FC Bayern also has high hopes for the youngster. In July, Osmani extended his contract through 2029. When he turns 18 in May 2027, his contract will automatically convert to a professional contract.

Now, Osmani may be facing an important decision. Kosovo might offer him a faster path to the senior national team, while competition within the DFB is significantly greater. On the other hand, the German national team certainly offers him better long-term prospects for international success.

It therefore remains to be seen which jersey Osmani will wear on the international stage in the future. He has the passport—but the decision between Kosovo and Germany has apparently not yet been made.
