Inter Miami targets Facundo Mura to boost a vulnerable defensive line

Inter Miami will host the New York City Football Club at Chase Stadium for the Eastern Conference final and the MLS Cup semifinals. After a stunning 4-0 victory over FC Cincinnati, highlighted by Lionel Messi's hat-trick of assists, the Herons now stand just two matches away from achieving one of their main objectives this year.

Despite the great momentum Inter Miami is living, we cannot forget that many players are looking at their last games with the pink shirt.

Nevertheless, David Beckham, the Mas brothers, and Javier Mascherano will have to decide which players are renewing their deals and which ones are leaving in January.

According to the Argentinian journalist Flavio Azzaro, Inter Miami is already making moves for the transfer window, and the Herons are following up with Racing Club of Avellaneda’s right back, Facundo Mura.

Inter Miami is set to sign Facundo Mura from Racing Club.

If Miami signs Mura, we are looking at a real competition for Ian Fray. Both have a similar profile, but the Argentinian had the advantage on defense. Cafundo has strong defensive timing, meaning he reads the game well to intercept through balls and recover possession by anticipating plays.

However, one key attribute Mura brings, something Inter Miami hasn’t found in their current full-backs, is his ability to close down the far post effectively.

His speed and physical attributes allow him to cover many zones on the right side, something that Fray and Weigandt struggle with throughout the season.

On the other hand, his experience on the international stages will also benefit the Herons. This year, Racing achieved the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores against Flamengo, a top-tier club in South America. This means that, in his short career, he has faced many crucial games that are intense, high-pressure, and physical.

And that is the key for Mascherano. When the Herons played The Crown, both Fray and Weignadt suffered the speed and physicality of Wilfred Zaha. I’m not saying Cafundo will stop him, I’m saying he is used to this sort of player, something that Fray and Chelo aren’t.

On the offensive side, Facundo Mura is a right-back with strong physical stamina. He can cover the flank with intensity, essential in Javier Mascherano’s system, which relies on full-backs who can make the full run up and down the wing.

He’s also smart; he knows when to push forward and when to stay back. On top of that, he’s quick tracking back, a weakness Miami has been needing to address.

If Inter Miami pulls out of this signing, it would be with Mura as a free agent. Beckham and the Mas brothers are smart in these things; the contract of the 26-year-old Argentinian finished on December 31st.
