The controversial visit of Lionel Messi and Inter Miami players to the White House alongside Donald Trump has not gone down well in the Middle East. Videos circulated on social media this Sunday show young Iranian children burning FC Barcelona and Argentina jerseys bearing Lionel Messi's name.

As a reminder, since February 28, a joint offensive by Israel and the United States has resulted in thousands of casualties, while destroying military facilities, strategic infrastructure, and civilian areas.

Burning Lionel Messi jerseys is a way to protest against Western imperialism in the region, which has affected several countries including Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. For the record, the Rosario native was received this week by U.S. President Donald Trump together with his teammates and Inter Miami staff.

The visit has been criticized by some observers, who see it as sports being used for political purposes at a time when the United States is justifying its military campaign against Iran.
