Inter Milan’s decision to impose a media blackout after Saturday’s draw with Atalanta should not be misread as calm acceptance with the decisions made by the referee.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the club are seething, and with good reason.
The source of the fury is the failure to award a penalty for Scalvini’s foul on Frattesi.
The incident has clear and established precedents in Serie A.
Indeed, including a strikingly similar situation in Inter vs Verona two years ago that was correctly punished.
“There are several precedents, including that of Inter-Verona two years ago, which make it codified, and therefore easily decipherable,” the outlet write.
The existence of those precedents makes the omission all the more difficult to justify.
The anger was further fuelled later.
Indeed, when AIA officials Gervasoni and De Marco privately acknowledged to those around them that the penalty call was not in doubt.
“The moment the AIA representatives let it be known that at least on the penalty there was no question. The level of recrimination inevitably increased,” Corriere note.
As for the silence itself, the outlet are clear on the motivation.
Inter are not staying quiet out of indifference.
Indeed, they are protecting themselves from sanctions and suspensions that open criticism of officials would inevitably invite.
