Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez will start on the bench for Argentina in today’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela.

While Martinez is certainly a key starter for Inter, he has found himself struggling to get into the lineup for Argentina in recent years.

Prior to the 2022 World Cup, Martinez had been one of the first names on the teamsheet for Argentina.

However, the Inter captain found his place under threat at the tournament.

The emergence of striker Julian Alvarez, then at Manchester City, gave Albiceleste coach Lionel Scaloni another option to lead the line at that tournament.

Martinez started Argentina’s first two matches, against Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

However, following poor performances in those two matches from the Inter man, Alvarez got the chance. And he remained the starter for the rest of that tournament.

Ever since the 2022 World Cup, Martinez and Alvarez have posed a regular selection dilemma for Scaloni.

At the Copa America this summer, it was the latter who largely started for Argentina.

However, that certainly did not stop Martinez from making an impact.

The Inter captain was the top scorer at the tournament. He scored give goals despite not starting regularly.

Martinez scored the winning goal in the final of that tournament against Colombia, a match in which he had come on as a substitute.

According to TyC Sports, if Martinez is to feature against Venezuela in today’s World Cup qualifier it will once again be as a substitute.

The broadcaster anticipates that Alvarez will start in attack. Martinez will have to settle for a place on the bench.
