Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij hopes to stay at Giuseppe Meazza beyond next summer amid uncertainty surrounding his future.
Speaking to the press in the build-up to the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League game against Bosnia & Herzegovina via FCInterNews, De Vrij clarified his ambitions.
Stefan de Vrij has been Inter’s defensive cornerstone since joining the club from Lazio as a free agent in the summer of 2023.
Over the past six years, the 32-year-old has collected 247 appearances for the Nerazzurri.
De Vrij has impressively racked up ten goals and seven assists despite playing as a center-back.
However, Francesco Acerbi’s phenomenal form has seen the Dutch ace tumble down the pecking order.
Indeed, he has only made four Serie A starts this season.
Though he amassed eight league appearances, it was largely thanks to Acerbi’s fitness problems.
With his contract running out in 2025, it’s hard to tell whether he’ll remain at Inter beyond next summer.
But if it’s up to him, De Vrij would be eager to stay on Inter’s payroll.
Speculation over De Vrij’s summer departure has fallen on the player’s deaf ears.
Despite all the uncertainty, he remains confident of staying at Inter.
“What did they say? I’m honestly curious, I don’t know anything about it,” he stated.
“I’m having a great time at Inter. I have an option to extend my contract for another season.
“This decision is up to the club, but I would like to explore that option.”
Inter have the option to extend De Vrij’s deal for a further year.
However, Simone Inzaghi’s men are keen to revamp their defensive options.
Spezia youngster Nicolo Bertola is among the club’s top transfer targets.
Furthermore, Tomas Palacios, who joined the club from Independiente Rivadavia in the summer, is waiting for his chance.
