Emanuele Giaccherini has identified defending Serie A champions Inter Milan as the leading Scudetto contenders.
During an interview with Corriere della Sera via FCInter1908, the 39-year-old discussed Napoli’s resurgence under Antonio Conte but backed Inter to claim the prize.
Napoli held the Nerazzurri to a controversial 1-1 draw at Giuseppe Meazza on the stroke of November’s international break.
In doing so, the three-time Italian champions preserved a narrow one-point lead at Serie A’s table summit.
However, Inter’s rip-roaring form, highlighted by a ten-game unbeaten run, means they’re unwilling to relinquish the crown.
Simone Inzaghi’s men have been firing on all cylinders since a Derby della Madonnina loss to AC Milan in September.
Despite recurring injury setbacks, they’ve stayed within striking distance of Napoli, displaying tremendous strength in depth.
Giaccherini, who hung up his boots in 2021 after a low-profile three-year stint at Chievo Verona, never played for Inter.
The former diminutive midfielder was a formidable foe during his playing career, proudly donning shirts of Juventus and Napoli.
However, he is a lifelong Nerazzurri supporter.
“Am I an Inter fan? I was born and raised in a family of Inter supporters. When I played, I only focused on my team.
“After that, let’s say I let myself go.”
Despite Napoli’s renaissance under Conte, Emanuele Giaccherini expects the Partenopei to run out of steam.
Indeed, he believes Napoli will falter after a phenomenal start.
Asked whether the 2023 Scudetto winners could dethrone Inter, he replied: “I don’t think so.
“Antonio is working towards this, but it takes time. They have a strong squad, but not a very deep one.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect to see them at the top.
“It should also be noted that they’ve picked up a few points with a bit of luck.”
