Corinthians’ decision not to renew Memphis Depay’s deal, which expired on 31 July, prompted a largely negative reaction in Europe, with criticism centring on how the episode was handled.

A key hurdle was unpaid bonuses, above R$ 42 million and potentially R$ 77 million with interest. Memphis accepted a lower wage, instalments and to drop extra claims. He arrived in September 2024, played 79 games, scored 20 goals and won three domestic trophies.
