It was a mixed bag for Eintracht’s respective international players, with wins for Germany and Belgium, a draw for Japan and a defeat for Türkiye.
After going down 2-0 to Slovakia in their opening group match, Germany turned things around with a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Cologne. Eintracht captain Robin Koch was in the starting line-up as the team took an early lead and then shrugged off an equaliser from the visitors to put their foot on the gas in the second half and take all three points. Koch played the full 90 minutes, while Nnamdi Collins was an unused substitute after making his debut three days earlier. Next up for Germany in October is a home clash with Luxembourg before the return fixture against Northern Ireland.
Six of the best once again
Arthur Theate and Michy Batshuayi cruised to two easy wins in a row with Belgium. After seeing off Liechtenstein 6-0, they racked up the same scoreline against Kazakhstan. Theate, who had scored his first ever goal for the Red Devils the previous week, played the entire match, while Batshuayi remained on the bench throughout.
The final score was also 6-0 at the Konya Büyükşehir Stadium in Türkiye, but unfortunately for the home team, it was visitors Spain who scored each and every one of the goals. Can Uzun watched the defeat from the substitute’s bench. Fans at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, meanwhile, ended up sitting through a goalless draw between Mexico and Japan. Ritsu Doan played 81 minutes of that friendly in California.
Doan heading home
After the match, Doan was given permission by the Japanese federation to leave the squad early and return to Frankfurt, with the 27-year-old set to join up with his club colleagues on Tuesday to prepare for the trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Friday evening (kick-off 20:30 CEST).
