Simone Inzaghi insists that yesterday’s 5-0 loss to PSG “doesn’t take away from the journey” Inter Milan made in the Champions League.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to InterTV after the match, via FCInterNews. He reflected on the crushing defeat, but was defiant as to the team’s season as a whole.
Inter Milan did not just lose to Paris Saint-Germain yesterday. They fell to an absolutely humiliating 5-0 defeat.
Throughout the Champions League this season, Inter’s strength has been their resilience.
In the league phase, the Nerazzurri only conceded a single goal. Then, in the knockouts, they held firm and showed an ability to react to adversity against opponents like Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Against PSG, however, Inter showed neither defensive resolve nor any capacity to overturn a tough situation.

After the match, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi rued, “Clearly we’re disappointed and bitter at this loss.”
“And for the way that it came about.”
Inzaghi admitted that “clearly we should have done better.”
“Instead, we didn’t play well technically.”
“We suffered against Paris Saint-Germain,” the Inter coach said. “They deserved to win.”
“But that doesn’t take anything away from the work we’ve done,” he defiantly insisted. “I congratulated the guys for the journey they’ve taken, which has been brilliant.”
“Obviously we’re sorry for this final,” added Inzaghi. “But that doesn’t affect the 59 matches that this team has played.”
Then, Inzaghi admitted that he “tried to change things” in the second half.
“But it didn’t change much.”
“We started to leave more gaps,” the Nerazzurri coach noted. “And they were very good at punishing us every time.”
And over the season as a whole, Inzaghi said that “the guys have done well.”
“Now obviously there will be a lot of talk about the fact that they haven’t won any trophies. But I’m proud to be their coach.”
“For what they’ve done, and what they’ve given me.”
“They’ve always put their heart and soul onto the pitch,” the Inter coach said. “And you can’t do more than that.”
“Obviously tonight we all expected more. Me first of all.”
“But unfortunately, this happens in football,” the Inter coach reflected.
