Sunderland visit Portman Road on Saturday as Ipswich Town begin life back in the Premier League under Gary O’Neil, who has called for a no-fear approach. An away trip to Manchester United and a home meeting with Liverpool follow swiftly.
The Tractor Boys returned as Championship runners-up last season, then overhauled their squad and changed head coach after Kieran McKenna’s surprise departure brought former Wolves manager O’Neil back to the top flight. As a newly promoted side, they are among the relegation favourites.
Abdul Fatawu, Fulham pair Sasa Lukic and Issa Diop, and Celtic forward Daizen Maeda have arrived, with Strasbourg duo Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara added this week after working with O’Neil at the Ligue 1 club. Several recruits could debut against the Black Cats.
“We just need to keep the positive energy going. Everyone has worked their socks off pre-season.” He told TownTV.
“The challenge of the Premier is, I don’t want anyone to be scared of what we are going into, the message is there is no fear here about what we are going to go into. We are going to give it a real go every week - and I want the fans with us every time we do that.”
