According to Sky Sports (13.37), the Tractor Boys are interested in signing the 34-year-old as they look to bolster their bid for promotion.

Kieran McKenna’s side are seeking an immediate return to the top flight this season, having come 19th in the Premier League in the previous campaign.

The Suffolk outfit are currently in the play-off places, and are just a couple points behind second place Middlesbrough, while also holding a game in hand.

Cairney has made 13 appearances in the league for the Cottagers this campaign, including three starts, and is out of contract in June 2026.

Ipswich have reportedly made contact with Fulham regarding a possible move for Cairney.

The Tractor Boys have indicated their interest in the Scotland international, who has fallen down the pecking order of Marco Silva’s side.

It remains to be seen whether the London outfit would be willing to agree to a sale for the midfielder, who has featured in recent weeks for the Cottagers.

Cairney scored in a 1-1 draw away to Crystal Palace on 1 January, and he started in their 2-2 draw against Liverpool, as well as their 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

However, his contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, meaning Fulham are at risk of losing him for nothing in the summer.

Cairney has been with the Premier League side since 2015, and has been with the team through three promotions, as well as their 10th, 13th and 11th place finishes in the top flight in the last three years.

Ipswich are third in the Championship table, and will face Blackpool next up on 10 January in the third round of the FA Cup.

Fulham may be reluctant to let Tom Cairney go

Cairney has enjoyed a successful 11 years at Fulham, and is showing this month that he is still of use to Silva even at the age of 34.

On that basis, they may be reluctant to let him go even with the risk of losing him for nothing in the summer.

There’s no doubt he could have a big role to play for Ipswich in their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League, if they could sign him.

But this may prove too ambitious of a move at the moment, and it would only be a short-term improvement to the squad, as Cairney is into the final years of his career, so they cannot put too many resources toward getting this over the line.
