Cameron Humphreys could be on his way out of Ipswich Town, with a former side keen to see him return

Wycombe Wanderers are keen to make a move for forgotten Ipswich Town midfielder and former Chairboy loan star Cameron Humphreys this January.

This is per a report from the Bucks Free Press, which states that Wycombe are aiming to add to their engine room this month after injuries to Ewan Henderson and George Abbott.

However, despite the duo reportedly expected to be back in February, Michael Duff isn't targeting replacements to just plug the gap and then return to the bench once the Scotsman and the Tottenham Hotspur loanee return.

Humphreys was a massive part of the Chairboys squad last season, which challenged Birmingham City atop League One for the majority of the campaign, before falling away in the second half of the season and losing in the play-offs to eventual winners Charlton Athletic.

That was during a loan spell, and after an opening half of the current campaign back at Ipswich, which has seen limited opportunities for the 22-year-old, Wycombe seem interested in overseeing a return.

According to the Bucks Free Press, Wycombe are looking to former loanees to help bolster their midfield pack this January, with Humphreys joining Bolton Wanderers man Aaron Morley on their winter shopping list.

Both were big parts of the exciting Chairboys side under Matt Bloomfield in the first half of last season, and in Humphreys' case, there'll be no complaints if the 22-year-old makes his return in the coming weeks.

50 appearances across the season, with seven goals and six assists, along the way, saw the Ipswich midfielder win the supporters' Player of the Season over the likes of Richard Kone and Caleb Taylor at Wycombe last season.

But while Kone and Taylor have gone on to establish themselves in the Championship this term, the same unfortunately can't be said for Humphreys.

The strength in depth at Portman Road has worked against the 22-year-old, who has played just 10 Championship minutes across three games so far this season. Most weeks, he isn't in the squad, and the majority of his minutes are coming in the youth teams.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna labelled Humphreys "unlucky" towards the back end of December regarding his chances in the first team, and stated that a loan move could be explored this month.

Given his success at Adams Park last season, there's a likelihood that, if an agreement can be made, Michael Duff's side will be high on the list of his potential destinations.

Under Michael Duff, Wycombe have been one of the better teams in League One, losing just three of the 17 league games he's taken charge of and picking up the fifth-most points.

Now, last season's play-off semi-finalists are looking at the top six once again and will be hoping that a productive January transfer window can give them a boost towards finishing there.

Last season, Humphreys showed that he was a Championship-quality midfielder, but unfortunately, he was returning to one of the best sides in terms of quality across the board with the aim of returning to the Premier League, and the 22-year-old hasn't had a look-in.

If the Chairboys can secure his services once more, and he performs even close to what Wycombe fans know him to be capable of, Michael Duff's side will be one of the sides to look out for in the third-tier play-off race come the start of May.
