A fee in the region of €40 million has been discussed in recent weeks as a possible benchmark for a deal.

Palacios, a World Cup runner-up, is understood to have accepted a pay cut of about 25 per cent this summer after Leverkusen failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The player now appears to be on the verge of leaving Leverkusen.
