The 29-year-old was handed a start for the Boys in Green for their crucial clash against Hungary in Dublin, with both nations knowing the importance of the clash given Portugal are also in the World Cup qualifying group.

Ireland conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes, but they battled back to pick up a point after Evan Ferguson found the net before Adam Idah headed home an equaliser in stoppage time.

So, it was a decent point for the team in the end, and the Irish will now turn their attention to Armenia, who they face on Tuesday, as they look to pick up a victory.

However, they will have to do so without Szmodics, as the forward took to social media to confirm that he had picked up an unspecified injury issue that will prevent him from making the trip with the rest of the squad.

Gutted to be leaving camp early, fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious. Good luck to the boys in Armenia.”

Even though Szmodics was replaced by West Brom’s Mikey Johnston in the 78th minute of the game, he didn’t appear to be in major discomfort as he was subbed, so it remains to be seen what issue he has picked up.

Sammie Szmodics’ absence would be a big blow for Ipswich Town

The forward will now return to Portman Road, but all connected to Ipswich will be hoping that Szmodics is available for Friday night’s crucial home game against Sheffield United.

It has been a tough start to the campaign for the Tractor Boys, with Szmodics among those to have struggled in the opening weeks.

But, his quality at this level is clear, as he was outstanding for Blackburn a few years ago, and Kieran McKenna will expect the attacker to replicate those levels over the coming weeks and months.

Ipswich will hope their slow start to the season was down to the distractions of the transfer window, and, with a settled squad, they will expect to build momentum ahead of the October break as they look to climb the table.

Szmodics will be desperate to play a role in that, and with crucial qualifiers against Portugal and Armenia next month, it’s a big period for both club and country.

Now, it’s a case of waiting and seeing the extent of the injury, but the pleasing aspect for Ipswich is that they do have plenty of strength in depth, so McKenna will expect others to step up if they have to do without Szmodics for any period.
