Andoni Iraola expects Joe Gomez to resume full training with Liverpool next week, as the head coach gave an update on five injured players ahead of Friday’s trip to Ipswich Town.

Gomez has been out since suffering a muscle injury during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, forced off just ten minutes into a friendly against Sunderland.

“The closest one is Joe,” Iraola said. “Joe will probably start training with us next week, and it has gone normally, the recovery, from a muscle injury, more or less we were expecting the time on this. I hope we can have him before the break, let’s say.”

Giovanni Leoni is next in line, according to Iraola, having been sidelined for close to a year after tearing his ACL on his Liverpool debut against Southampton last September. Federico Chiesa, who picked up a muscle problem last month, is targeting a similar timeframe.

“I think the next one probably should be Giovanni Leoni,” Iraola said. “I think the plan is also to start training during the break, with the group.” He added of Chiesa: “I think even Fede should be around those dates.”

Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike remain further away, with no firm return date given for either. Bradley has been out since undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury sustained at Arsenal in January, while Ekitike has been sidelined since rupturing his Achilles tendon in April.

“Probably Conor, and especially Hugo, will go later, yes,” Iraola said.

Liverpool go into Friday’s game at Portman Road still searching for a first win of the season, having drawn their opening two matches against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
