Iraq and United Arab Emirates in frame if Iran withdraws from 2026 World Cup

Iran’s place at the 2026 World Cup is in doubt amid the regional conflict and the recent United States strike, creating an unprecedented scenario. The tournament is due to begin on 11 June. FIFA has stressed its aim is to deliver a safe event with every team involved, yet Iranian federation president Mehdi Taj has questioned participation after the attack.

If Iran do withdraw, any replacement is expected to come from the Asian confederation. The Guardian reports that Iraq would be first in line to replace Iran if they fail to qualify via the intercontinental route.

Iran qualified by winning Group A in the third round of Asian qualifying and are scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, and Egypt in Seattle.

FIFA’s regulations do not set out a fixed procedure for replacing a team already qualified for the finals. Instead, they grant the governing body full discretion to take whatever measures it deems necessary, including naming another association to take a vacated place.

No team has withdrawn after the draw since 1950, when France and India pulled out citing travel costs.

Iraq beat United Arab Emirates in a play-off that earned access to an intercontinental tie on 31 March in Monterrey against Bolivia or Suriname, with the winner reaching the World Cup. Should Iraq qualify that way, UAE would be next in line as the best-placed Asian side without a berth.

FIFA remains intent on proceeding as planned despite tensions between Iran and the United States. US entry is barred for Iranian citizens, with limited exemptions for players, coaches and support staff, and several Iranian officials, including Mehdi Taj, were denied visas for December’s draw in Washington.
