Amid external and internal scrutiny, Filipe Luís is enduring his toughest spell since taking charge of Flamengo. Protests at Ninho do Urubu on Saturday also targeted the Portuguese executive José Boto.
According to Globo.com, Boto remains valued by the hierarchy, a trusted figure for Bap who consults him on football matters. On Friday, the day after the Recopa defeat to Lanús of Argentina, he held a long meeting with the president at the training ground while the squad had a day off.
Even so, he is not universally backed at the club’s base, with some, including players, unhappy with his communication style. During Saturday’s protest, supporters displayed a banner branding him incompetent and directed abuse at him, alongside broader chants against the board and squad.
The decision for now is to keep Filipe Luís. He led training as normal on Saturday and preparations are under way to face Madureira on Monday at 21:00 Brasília time at Maracanã for a place in the Carioca final.
After a second trophy slipped away this season, Boto did not speak to the media at Maracanã. Under the previous regime Marcos Braz often fronted up in crises, and the current silence may be strategic given likely questions over whether Filipe Luís would remain if the Carioca is also lost.
In his first year in Brazilian football, Boto was part of a record 2025 with four trophies, missing only the Copa do Brasil. He has signed 10 players, Juninho, Danilo, Jorginho, Samuel Lino, Saúl, Royal, Carrascal, Vitão, Andrew and Paquetá, though only Jorginho is an undisputed starter and the lack of a centre forward remains a sore point.
