Eintracht Frankfurt are weighing up a move for Xabi Alonso following the dismissal of head coach Dino Toppmöller as the Bundesliga club looks for rapid reset after run of damaging results.
Frankfurt confirmed Toppmöller’s departure on Sunday stating that the decision came “after comprehensive analysis of the sporting and structural aspects over recent weeks” The call followed chaotic 3 - 3 draw with Werder Bremen on Friday and broader slide in form.
The club currently sits seventh in the Bundesliga with 27 point but their defensive record has become major concern.
Frankfurt have conceded 39 goals in 18 league match, one of the weakest back lines in the division despite remaining alive in European competition.
They are still involved in the Champions League and face Qarabag on Wednesday, though they occupy 30th place in the standings.
According to BILD, Frankfurt have considered several candidates including Edin Terzić, Marco Rose and Roger Schmidt. However the priority is to convince Xabi Alonso to return to Germany.
The report adds that sporting director Markus Krösche is keen to meet Alonso personally to explore the possibility of bringing him to Frankfurt.
