Gustav Isaksen has become the fourth Lazio player to undergo surgery to repair groin damage over the past year or so.
Mattia Zaccagni was the first of the bunch, going under the knife last summer. Nicolo Rovella suffered a similar issue at the start of the previous campaign. He initially tried to resist surgery, but eventually succumbed to this solution after failing to notice the desired improvement through alternative surgery. Danilo Cataldi followed suit at the end of the season and is hoping to recover when the action resumes.
Like Rovella, Isaksen initially tried to avoid going under the knife before realizing he was wasting his time with futile methods. Therefore, the Dane became the second Lazio player to undergo surgery on Wednesday, as goalkeeper Alessio Furlanetto had an ACL operation. The club confirmed the news through a note published on the official Lazio website.
SS Lazio announces that this afternoon, footballer Gustav Isaksen underwent surgery for a bilateral sports hernia at the UM Hernienzentrum in Munich. The operation, successfully performed by Professor Joachim Conze, was carried out in close coordination with the SS Lazio medical staff, represented by Professor Francesco Franceschi and club doctor Professor Pietro Monachino. The player will immediately begin his rehabilitation program according to the protocol developed by the Biancoceleste medical staff, with the aim of allowing him to return to competitive activity within the expected timeframe.
While the statement didn’t provide a timetable, players usually require a couple of months to recover from groin surgery. Therefore, Isaksen will likely miss the start of the new season, in another blow for Gennaro Gattuso, who was planning to rely on him as a regular starter.
The Biancocelesti were planning to sell Matteo Cancellieri, who still has one year left on his contract, with Olympicos, Torino, and Fiorentina emerging as potential destinations. However, Isaksen’s unavailability could prompt the management to keep to the Italian winger, unless they bring in a replacement who manages to settle quickly at Formello.
The alternative solution could be deploying the versatile Tijjani Noslin on the right wing until Isaksen returns to action.
