Sheffield United produced a dominant and clinical Steel City derby performance, easing past Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at Hillsborough to claim city bragging rights and spark fresh hope in their campaign.
Wednesday began brightly, but the Blades quickly settled, taking control and asserting themselves and their early composure was rewarded on 11 minutes when United’s high press forced a turnover. Callum O’Hare threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Tyrese Campbell, who finished coolly to send the away end into raptures.
Moments later, Dominic Iorfa’s loose pass gifted Danny Ings a golden chance, only for Owls keeper Ethan Horvath to race out and make a crucial block. Ings then had the ball in the net shortly before the interval, but celebrations were halted by an offside flag.

United emerged from the break even stronger. Within minutes, Campbell struck again after Sydie Peck intercepted a misplaced pass from debutant Liam Cooper. Campbell swept home his second of the afternoon, making it three goals in his last three Steel City derby appearances.
With 20 minutes to go, Patrick Bamford entered for his debut, replacing Ings, and immediately added further threat to United’s attack. Wednesday’s sloppiness persisted, allowing Andre Brooks to force another save from Horvath, while Tom Cannon was denied one-on-one after a wonderfully weighted pass from Bamford. The new signing then nearly flicked home a third himself as United continued to surge forward.
The final blow came as home supporters began to stream out. Cannon picked up possession 25 yards from goal and arrowed a precise driven shot into the bottom corner.
Steel City derby hero Tyrese Campbell, now with three goals in his last three meetings with Wednesday, believes the victory can act as a springboard for United’s season.
“Obviously I scored the winner last year and that gave me confidence and belief,” he told SUTV. “I had a couple more chances that I back myself to score. It could have been a lot more than 3-0, but we take it. We handled the pressure perfectly, our gameplan worked to perfection.”
Campbell acknowledged the frustration surrounding United’s early-season struggles but insisted the squad has worked hard to put things right.
“The start to this season caught us off guard,” he said. “We’re just focused on going back up the table and picking up points game by game.”
“We worked hard throughout the international break to put things right. We should be a lot higher in the league than we are and we’ve got to take accountability for that.”
Sheffield United host Portsmouth on Wednesday night. John Mousinho’s team are the worst away side in the Championship this season, though they head to Bramall Lane after defeating Millwall 3-1 last weekend.
