Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that she welcomes the increased competition at the top of this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League table.

The Blues go into this afternoon’s fixture at Liverpool in the unfamiliar ranking of second after Manchester City’s recent move into pole position. The Cityzens increased their lead at the top of the table to four points with a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.

When speaking to the media ahead of the Liverpool game, Chelsea boss Bompastor said that she welcomes the tough competition and that it doesn’t impact her own team’s long-term goals.

“The league is really competitive,” Bompastor said. “From the outside, it maybe looked like the competition last year wasn’t as high because we finished in a really strong position, 12 points ahead of Arsenal. For us, it always felt tough every weekend and that the competition was high.

“It doesn’t change anything this season, we know that a lot of teams in this league can compete for the title. The title race is really tough and Man City are now at the top of the table. It doesn’t change anything for us, it’s still early in the season and we know what we want to achieve. We are focused to achieve our goals and we are still in a good position for that. It’s really good for the women’s game to have the competition, to have many teams to compete for the title and to compete at the highest level with us.”

Latest opponents Liverpool have collected just one point so far but Bompastor has full respect for opposite number Gareth Taylor and can see exactly what he is trying to achieve.

She said “Gareth is a really good coach. When you look at Liverpool’s performances, you can see the way he wants to play. It shows how good he is as a coach because that’s the legacy to implement your ideas coming into a new club. For that reason, he is doing well.

“When you look at their games, their league position doesn’t reflect their performances. Most of the games, they’ve lost by the odd goal which means that they are very good at not conceding a lot of goals.

“I’m aware that it’s been really tough for them on and off the pitch. Sometimes, it’s difficult; they are facing a transitional year and also tough moments in the club. I’m hoping they won’t react to the tough moments in a good way in this game.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 12pm.
