Andy Robertson gave a heartfelt reflection on his international career after playing his 100th game for Scotland.

Robertson captained his side to a 2-0 victory away in North Macedonia, and is now closing in on Kenny Dalglish’s appearance record of 102 games.

The Scotland skipper showed enormous gratitude to the national team at full-time.

“It means everything to me and my family,” Robertson told the BBC.

“It has been an unbelievable journey. I remember my first game under Gordon Strachan in Poland. It has been a process from there, trying to keep showing up and always being available for my country. I’m very fortunate to be able to have done that so many times.

“It’s emotional for me because I love this country and I’ve never hid away from that. It’s a pretty special achievement.

“They did a nice presentation for me, and my message was clear, I just wanted to win. The lads did so well to get the win and it’s one that will be memorable for a long time for me and my family.”

Scotland were relieved to end their four-game goalless run. Kieron Bowie and John McGinn netted the first goals of a new era under Sébastien Pocognoli, in what was a vital first win for the 39-year old Belgium coach.

Scotland will carry some momentum into Tuesday’s clash at Hampden against Slovenia, with the two countries now fighting for second place in their Nations League group.

Robertson paid tribute to his teammates, who had to tough it out with 10 men after Scott McKenna was shown red in the 83rd minute.

“I thought we played really well on a really difficult pitch. I thought we could have been four or five nil up. We obviously made it a wee bit interesting with the sending off, but then I thought we defended so well for the last 10 minutes and kept a clean sheet.

“I thought the performance all-round was really good. The lads were magnificent and it was a big win. You want to get it for the manager as early as possible and we’ve done that now.”
