Gus Poyet says Dan Ballard’s potential absence could be a problem for Sunderland after the defender was injured on Northern Ireland duty.

According to Sunderland Echo, the centre-back pulled up in added time of Northern Ireland’s 1-0 win over Georgia, left on crutches, and returned to Wearside for assessment after being ruled out of the rest of the break.

Sunderland have yet to confirm the nature or extent of the issue.

Poyet said: “It's a problem.” He added: “So, let's hope it's nothing serious and he can get back as soon as possible.”

Michael O’Neill said: “He [Ballard] needs to be assessed by his club’s medical staff, and we want him fit as soon as possible for Sunderland and obviously for ourselves.” He continued: “We can only wish him the speediest of recovery possible, and hopefully we’ll see him in November.”
