2-0 success against Go Ahead Eagles

We got them - our first three points in the UEFA Europa League's league phase! We took a highly deserved win against Go Ahead Eagles on Matchday 4 with a much-improved performance. Yorbe Vertessen and Aleksa Terzic scored two spectacular goals, while Christian Zawieschitzky kept a clean sheet while deputising for Alexander Schlager.

Match summary

The fog was hanging over Salzburg as both teams took a while to get to grips with the game. The first clear chances fell at either end around the 15-minute mark, with the visitors going closer. Our play off-the-ball was not efficient enough in the opening 45 minutes to put the Dutch outfit under pressure.

The 10,000 fans at the Red Bull Arena were treated to an evenly contested affair that ebbed and flowed in both directions as we waited to see who would strike the first blow. The best chances in the first half fell to Clement Bischoff (15'/34'), but the Dane was not able to strike as effectively from distance as he did against SV Ried recently. There were less attacking moments before the break that we would have hoped for, and there could be no complaints that it remained goalless.

Things were rather different in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Vertessen threatened the target, and a little later the visiting goalkeeper allowed a Terzic cross through is legs for the Belgian to give us the lead (59'). The confidence gained from that pushed us forward as we dominated and looked for a second goal!

Both Sota Kitano (62'/65') and Edmund Baidoo (66'/77') had a pair of chances before Terzic managed with an incredible goal to spoil the efforts of the Dutch side to come back! The Serb was given too much space to approach the penalty area and took aim, smashing a drive perfectly into the top corner (80'). There was no taking the lead away from us there, as the final whistle and three precious points resulted! We now want to cement our ADMIRAL Bundesliga lead before the international break away at Sturm Graz this Sunday at 17:00 CET.

It feels fantastic, of course - there's no better confidence booster than a win! We needed the first 20 minutes to get into the game and we hadn't really gained control yet, especially defensively. From the 50th minute onward, we made some adjustments and were then more courageous, more aggressive and in a good groove. We scored two brilliant goals and, all things considered, absolutely deserved the victory. We're thrilled with the three points, and now we're looking forward to the match against the reigning Bundesliga champions.

It's a great feeling! First and foremost, I'm happy that we got our first points as a team - we needed that. Staying hungry, fighting for every ball, and helping the team – that's what I'm here for. We've shown who we are – now we have to keep it up.

Aleksa Terzic

The second half in particular was really good, and we created several chances. We stepped up our energy levels. Our hopes of advancing are still alive, but we need to consistently deliver performances like this. Our last few games have been good, now we have to stick at it!
