‘It’s been a disastrous start to the season’ – Luis Enrique on PSG’s struggles

Luis Enrique would certainly have preferred to kick off his fourth campaign at the helm of Paris Saint-Germain on a more relaxed note. Having beaten Aston Villa to claim only the second UEFA Super Cup in their history, Les Rouge et Bleu once again looked set to assert their dominance across the continent. Yet, a month after that prestigious triumph, PSG are still chasing their second win of the season.

Having first been denied the Trophée des Champions by RC Lens, the capital club have since conceded two draws and a defeat in three league matches. It is an unusual start for the Parisians, who are already seven points behind AS Monaco, the current league leaders, and whose defensive frailties are raising questions.

These difficulties are readily acknowledged by Enrique, though he is careful not to over-dramatise the situation. “If we’re just talking about results, it’s been a disastrous start to the season,” he conceded at a press conference on the eve of PSG’s Champions League opener. “But as a manager, you try to focus on the positives of what’s happening on the pitch. There are things to improve, but we deserve more points.”

Against Yaya Touré’s Slovan Bratislava tomorrow, the Spanish manager will already have the opportunity to remind everyone that, once again this season, PSG will be in the running for every trophy.
