Liverpool return to Premier League duty this weekend with confidence restored and expectations raised, as they prepare to face AFC Bournemouth on the south coast. A comprehensive 3-0 victory away at Marseille in midweek has placed Arne Slot’s side firmly in control of their Champions League destiny, but the focus now shifts back to domestic matters.
Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, plus an own goal, delivered a performance that was as professional as it was assertive. For Joe Gomez, the challenge is ensuring that European momentum translates into league consistency.
“I think we’ve just got to try to take belief from it and take the positives from the game, keep the good habits,” Gomez told Liverpoolfc.com.
Gomez highlighted the importance of Liverpool’s clean sheet in France, particularly after a run of league matches where strong performances had not always delivered convincing results.
“Obviously a clean sheet is a massive foundation. I think defensively we’ve been pretty solid regardless but we’ve just not been able to see out games all the time and get a convincing win.”
That comment neatly captures Liverpool’s current mood. They are unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions, yet four consecutive Premier League draws have left their title defence on uncertain ground.

The visit to AFC Bournemouth is unlikely to offer much respite. The Cherries have developed a reputation for energy, pressing and smart recruitment, making them a difficult opponent at home.
“Obviously Bournemouth are a high-intensity team, [we are] back in the Premier League and it’ll be tough away from home, but we’ll just have to try to take what we can towards the game.”
Gomez also praised the structure behind Bournemouth’s recent success.
“Everyone knows their ability and how good they are as a group… A great manager and a great team, so it’s going to be a tough game.”
For Liverpool, this fixture represents an opportunity to finally convert control into points, especially with rivals tightening the race at the top.
Despite their European progress, Gomez remains realistic about Liverpool’s broader objectives.
“Obviously we know our league position is pretty difficult in terms of trying to retain the championship.”
The Champions League, however, offers a clearer pathway.
“In the Champions League, aiming to qualify in the week and get top eight is massive for us and gives us a real focus to strive for and try to make something for the season.”
With Qarabag waiting at Anfield next, Liverpool have little time to pause. Momentum, belief and defensive solidity now need to become habits, not moments.
“It’s only positive and we’ve got to enjoy it and relish the challenge.”
