It’s just not Cricket

I am guessing most of my fellow Newcastle United fans will know that there is a bit of Cricket on the go down under, The Ashes will be decided across a period of seven weeks or so as Australia take on England.

The first five day test match schedule for Perth, to be played November 21 to November 25.

I love the Cricket.

Especially when it is on in the middle of the night, despite the obvious issues with having no sleep when you then need to go to work.

This first test saw me get a couple of hours kip on Thursday night, early hours of Friday, then it was up for not long after 2am to watch the first day of the first test in Perth (the fourth test starting Boxing Day takes place at the MCG, where Newcastle played Spurs 18 months ago).

It was the same for me last night/this morning for the second day of this first Ashes test, apart from the fact I was out on Friday night, as always, then when getting in at around 1am I thought no way am I going to risk trying to get an hour’s sleep and missing any of this.

You see, if you haven’t been watching (by the way, a friend of mine who doesn’t have access to TNT Sports and had to rely on listening to Test Match Special on the radio, informs me that a rotund out of work football manager from Corbridge was a guest on the coverage…it could have been worse, I could have been listening to him!) the Cricket and/or have no interest in it, well, it has been gripping to say the least.

Nineteen wickets went down on the first day, then today (this morning) it was all over. A five day test lasting less than two full days.

It was riveting stuff, edge of the seat time then in the fourth innings the Aussies Bazballed (if you aren’t into Cricket ask a friend who is) England, smashing 205 in only 28 overs to win it, losing only two wickets.

As always, I absolutely love following the Cricket and totally desperate for England to win.

This was no exception, the Ashes is of course the pinnacle, the absolute best when we beat them.

However…

After this defeat though, like always with the Cricket, inside two minutes I just forget all about it and it doesn’t bother me. I don’t give it another thought.

England football is the same for me, even in a tournament, World Cup and Euros. I absolutely love these summer tournaments (even when they get played in Winter…) and I am absolutely desperate to see England win.

However, if/when(!) they get knocked out, two minutes later it is…oh well, what’s for tea?

With Newcastle United however….

When NUFC lose, it makes me miserable for days/weeks until the next game comes around. I can’t get it out of my head and I am on a downer for the duration.

As one of my mates once put it, when it comes to Newcastle United, after a defeat you wake up in a bad mood the next morning even before you remember that they did lose!

As soon as this first Ashes test was lost this Saturday morning, I was instantly only thinking about Newcastle v Man City later on AND how early I can convince the wife that it is acceptable for me to heading into town to go on the drink pre-match.
