After a somewhat shaky start to his FC Barcelona career, the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been consistently improving his performances over the last few games.

The veteran goalkeeper was immense in his last game, the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Benfica at Estadio de la Luz. It will be safe to say that the Pole’s contributions were essential to keep the Catalans competitive in this game after the Blaugranes had been left with 10 men from the 22nd minute when Pau Cubarsi was expelled.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick himself recognised the good performances put in by Szczesny in that game as he addressed a press conference ahead of the La Liga game against Osasuna.

Talking about the Polish shot-stopper, the German coach said:

“It’s his job, I’ll put it that way. The other ten players defended very well against eleven, but of course, he helped us a lot. It’s his job. That’s why, at the moment, he’s the number one.”

The Barcelona coach also took this opportunity to explain how the decision to sign Szczesny was taken:

“When you see players and you know how they used to play, and then you watch them in training, you get a feeling. I’m not the only one who decides. I have a great staff around me, and we talk a lot about the players’ performances and what they can contribute. That’s how we manage the team.”

“For me, it was clear that he could get here. The other coaches also thought so. It’s not a one-man decision. I make decisions, but I always want to know the opinions of others.”

Without any doubt, the decision to sign the Pole is proving to be right with every passing game. Since he has started playing for Barcelona, Szczesny is yet to lose a game, having won 12 and drawn 2, and he has been key for his team as they continue on an unbeaten run since the turn of the year.
