Sunderland Echo reports that Sunderland have lodged a loan bid for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, after senior club sources confirmed the move, with a view to a permanent switch when his contract ends next summer.

Sunderland are understood to be prepared to cover part of his wages to bring him to the Stadium of Light. The push for Grealish is running alongside talks for Marseille winger Igor Paixão, which accelerated on Wednesday.

Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a British record £100 million. He has made 159 appearances, scoring 17 goals with 23 assists, and has won three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Primarily a left-sided player, he has featured in both of City’s competitive games this season. He spent last term on loan at Everton, registering two goals and six assists in 22 outings before injury curtailed his campaign. He has 39 senior England caps.

City head coach Enzo Maresca has said Grealish will have chances while he remains at the club, adding that with the window open he would see what happens. Former manager Pep Guardiola has previously said Grealish’s next move should provide regular first-team football and that he hoped the player would recover and keep playing next season.
