Sunderland have moved for two wingers, lodging an offer to take Jack Grealish on loan while pursuing Marseille’s Igor Paixão. The push comes as Regis Le Bris prepares his Europa League-bound squad for a hectic season.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Black Cats have submitted a season-long loan bid for the Manchester City and England winger. The proposal includes City covering part of his wages and could become permanent next summer when his contract ends, with Paixão also being chased.

Sunderland have kept a measured approach this summer after deals for Belgium international Thomas Meunier, Toulouse left-back Dayaan Methalie and Royal Antwerp midfielder Jules Ahoka. Their seventh-place Premier League finish secured a place in the Europa League league phase, adding at least eight extra fixtures.

Paixão, previously linked with Leeds United before joining Marseille from Feyenoord, is understood to be a leading option with talks for Sporting CP’s Geny Catamo yet to yield a breakthrough. Marseille are thought to be open to offers amid financial pressures, which could give Sunderland an opening before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. A bid is believed to have gone in earlier this week and discussions continue, though there is no indication a deal is close or that personal terms are agreed.

Grealish joined City in 2021 in a reported £100m move and helped deliver the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in his second season. He fell out of favour in Pep Guardiola’s final campaign and spent last term on loan at Everton, scoring two goals and making four assists in 22 appearances. He returned to make a late cameo in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth, and with one year left on his deal his future remains uncertain.
