Manchester United youngster Jacob Devaney is reportedly poised to complete a move to Scottish side St Mirren.
Devaney has enjoyed an impressive rise in the youth ranks since joining United in April 2023 at just 15.
An extremely versatile player who is capable of playing in multiple midfield roles as well as in defence, Devaney is highly rated at Old Trafford, as evidenced by the club handing him the Under-21s captaincy.
He was a cornerstone of the Under-18s’ 2023/24 treble-winning campaign, making 22 appearances out of a possible 24, more than any other player that season.
The 18-year-old has turned out 22 times this season across all competitions, contributing three goals and one assist.
Although Devaney has trained with the senior squad, he is still waiting to make his first-team debut. The next clear step in his progression is consistent competitive football, which is an opportunity United currently cannot provide, particularly without the fixture congestion of European football.
Ahead of the close of the winter transfer window later today, it has emerged that Devaney is closing in on a loan move to St Mirren.
According to the BBC journalist Simon Stone, “Manchester United Under-21s skipper Jacob Devaney is set for a loan move to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.”
“He is yet to break into the first-team squad and is now set to get his chance in Scotland’s top flight with St Mirren, who have not won in the league since 20 December.”
St Mirren currently lie in 10th place in the Scottish Premiership, nine points above Livingston, who lie firmly at the bottom of the standings.
If he earns a place in the team, the loan would provide the perfect platform for Devaney to refine his game. Strong performances could then see him return to United well-positioned to compete for a first-team spot.
Meanwhile, Michael Carrick and his players are next in action on Saturday when they host Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur in the early kick-off.
