Jair’s injury could hinder his automatic contract extension at Vasco, which depends on second half appearances. He had played six of nine matches in this period before being sidelined.

According to Globo.com, a clause active from 1 July extends his deal to the end of 2027 if he features in more than 60% of Vasco’s matches in the second half of 2026, and he is likely to miss around four weeks. The club had already renewed his contract last year so he could complete treatment at São Januário and be available in 2026.

Jair returned to the starting side after the World Cup break and became a key figure in Pedro Emanuel’s midfield. He impressed until suffering the setback against Santos.

He went down unchallenged in the opening minutes at São Januário after shaping to pass, then was replaced by debutant Santiago Sosa. Subsequent scans confirmed a right adductor problem, and the club has not disclosed a recovery timetable.

His absence reduces the number of fixtures available to reach the 60% threshold, complicating an automatic renewal and his guaranteed stay into 2027. He began ice treatment immediately and underwent further tests on Monday after the squad’s return.
