Matthias Jaissle says Amar Dedic’s hamstring injury “does not look too serious” as Newcastle await further clarity on the defender’s fitness.

Dedic picked up a hamstring problem in the Carabao Cup win over Millwall, but the early signs have left Jaissle hopeful that the injury will not result in a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Newcastle boss has also urged youngsters Baz Toure and Aladji Bamba to be patient as they continue to adapt and develop within his first-team squad.

“With Baz, it’s really clear. He’s a young lad,” Jaissle said. “You see the steps in training. He’s really committed.

“But Harvey [Barnes] is performing on a high level, so sometimes you get less playing time.

“It’s the same with AB. We will give them time [to adapt and develop]. We’re not pushing them in getting more minutes. We’re supporting them.”

Reflecting on his side’s start to the season ahead of the game against Leeds on Monday, Jaissle said: “We are fine. We are happy with the start we’ve had definitely.

“But the Premier League is the Premier League. Every matchday it’s top opponents. Again, against Leeds it will be a tough away match. We want to continue that journey. We are ambitious but we are realistic.”
