James Bree says he would love to extend his Southampton contract, which expires at season’s end, with Saints likely to remain in the Championship. His stance contrasts with a January claim from Charlton boss Nathan Jones.

“I've loved my time here over three years. It's not all been smooth sailing personally, but I love the club. Everyone has always helped me at the club. If there is something I can do to extend it [contract], I would definitely love to do it.” He told the Daily Echo.

Bree struck the winner against Leicester City in the FA Cup on Saturday. Since returning to the starting XI against Portsmouth, he has been central to a shift to a back four.

In January, head coach Tonda Eckert said Bree’s return from his Charlton loan gave him more scope to tweak the system.

On a new deal, he said the club knows his view and decisions rest above him.

Jones said Charlton wanted to keep Bree, suggested the player did not want to return, and added that if he did go back he would want to play.

Eckert later said, “He [Bree] says that he's fully invested in this project, no matter what happens in the summer.” Supporters will hope for another win on Saturday to make it six unbeaten.
