Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park delivered a high-intensity contest, with player ratings assessing who stood up under pressure. With little between the sides in the Premier League table, the occasion carried real edge.
According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris’ team sought to impose themselves in hostile surroundings against a Newcastle side looking to respond after a difficult week.
Early on, goalkeeper Melker Ellborg looked uncertain, delayed a goal kick that Anthony Gordon chased, and his distribution faltered under pressure. He steadied after the interval.
Newcastle opened the scoring, with no blame attached to Omar Alderete. Assured in defence and superb on the ball, he split lines repeatedly and was Sunderland’s standout, rated nine.
Trai Hume operated out of position at left-back and dropped into midfield at times. He showed calm on the ball and hooked back the cross for Sunderland’s second-half equaliser, earning seven.
Lutsharel Geertruida began at right-back and struggled before the break as Sunderland searched for rhythm. He improved markedly in the second half and posed a threat going forward, also receiving seven.
