James Milner overtook Gareth Barry with his 653rd appearance as an early first-half substitute for Carlos Baleba in Brighton's encounter with Aston Villa on Wednesday.

It was fitting that the 40-year-old achieved the milestone on his old stomping ground, not least as he equalled his one-time Villa teammate Gareth Barry with the milestone.
