James Morrison has revealed what he told his West Brom players at half-time in 3-1 victory against Burnley

James Morrison praised the intensity of West Brom’s performance in their comeback victory over Burnley on Sunday.

The Baggies went behind in the early stages due to a Callum Style own goal, but were able to turn things around to take home all three points.

Harry Whitwell equalised by the 18th minute to ensure it was all square going into half time, and then a brace from Isaac Price proved the difference in the second 45.

The victory maintained Albion’s 100 per cent start to the new Championship season, and they are one of only four sides to earn six points from a possible six.

West Brom narrowly avoided relegation in 2025/26, but the team are making a promising start to the new campaign under Morrison.

The Midlands outfit will be hoping they can carry this momentum forward the next few weeks to establish their credentials as a potential contender for a top eight finish.

Morrison praised his team’s performance, highlighting how well they did the basics, as well as their mentality to bounce back well from an early setback of going behind to an own goal in the opening 10 minutes.

He expressed his delight at the players remaining patient, and making use of the amount of time left in the game to turn things around.

“We did the basics really well, of tackles,” said Morrison, via the Burnley Express.

“When we lose it, we run back and when the opportunities were given to us, we took advantage.

“So it started really well, first five to 10, and we showed a lot to respond from the early setback.

“Obviously the timing of the goal allows you to do that.

“There's plenty of time left, don't worry.

“Once we got a foothold in the game, the chances were there for us.

“But we were patient.”

Morrison claimed after the Burnley victory that he emphasised the importance of showing intensity during his half-time team talk, which helped inspire his side to a 3-1 victory at the Hawthorns.

“Just with the defensive setup, we had to try and find the extra pass, wait for the spaces to open up and it came,” he added.

“The fans pay the money and they want to see exciting football and I think they enjoyed both sides of the game.

“At times we had to defend the box, we defended the box, but also doing the dirty work of tackles, running back, lose the ball, reactions to it, help your teammate, I was really pleased.

“I felt like Burnley couldn't handle the intensity really, and I could smell that at half-time, so my message was to up the intensity and keep going.”

West Brom got their season underway with a 2-1 win away to Norwich City, who have been tipped by many to compete for at least a play-off place this season.

And now they’ve earned another three points against the Clarets, who many expect to compete for a top two finish after suffering Premier League relegation last season.

West Brom’s summer business

The transfer window is set to close next week, and it remains to be seen whether the Baggies will add any more players as part of their plans.

The Championship side have already signed Nolan Galves Felix Horn Myhre, Rabby Nzingoula, Barney Stewart, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Matt Ingram and Conor Townsend.

Galves, Horn Myhre and Morgan were all in the starting lineup for the victory against Burnley on Sunday, with Stewart and Nzingoula coming off the bench.

West Brom have until 1 September to complete any more transfer dealings before the market shuts.

Going away to Norwich and winning on the opening day was a massively positive result, but a win at home to Burnley is even stronger.

Both sides could be promotion rivals this year, so taking six points from a possible six will give fans every reason to be optimistic for the rest of the campaign.

Morrison’s comments regarding the Clarets’ lack of intensity will be quite worrying for Nicky Hayen, who will want to see more from his team.

After going ahead so early, Burnley ultimately failed to take advantage and deservedly threw away the three points.
