James Rodriguez, Colombia’s record cap holder, retires from international football

James Rodriguez has retired from international football, bowing out as Colombia’s record appearance maker with 131 caps.

In a video posted on his social channels on Tuesday, the 35-year-old confirmed the decision. He said representing Colombia had been among the greatest honours of his life and thanked supporters for every match, joy, tear and dream shared.

First capped in 2011, he departs the Cafeteros with 31 goals.

He captained Colombia at the 2026 World Cup, starting every game. They were knocked out by Switzerland in the last 16 after a 0-0 draw and 3-4 on penalties.

His club career continues, having joined Atlético Nacional on Friday.
