Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool will defeat Galatasaray to reach the Champions League quarter-final but doesn’t ‘have any hope’ for his former side if they face Paris Saint-Germain next.

The Reds endured a difficult night in Istanbul as they were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were exposed once again as Mario Lemina headed home the only goal of the match in the seventh minute.

Arne Slot’s team must now overturn that result in the return leg at Anfield to qualify for the quarter-final, where they will face either Chelsea or PSG.

Carragher wasn’t impressed with Liverpool’s performance against Galatasaray, and he fears their European journey will likely end in the quarter-final.

Expressing his views on CBS Sports, he said: “This team is just a million miles off where it was supposed to be this season, which was that we’d be talking about them in the same light the way we speak about Bayern Munich right now. That was the whole point of Liverpool spending over £400 million in the summer was to go the next step from winning the Premier League to go and win the Champions League.

“And we’re talking about a team who have now got to change a deficit against Galatasaray, which I think they will, but I don’t have any hope for Liverpool going any further than that if it’s Paris Saint-Germain in the next round as I think it may be, and that’s that for me is a big worry.”

Liverpool have endured a miserable campaign.

They are sitting sixth in the Premier League and could miss out on Champions League qualification for next season.

Liverpool are also struggling in Europe, with Galatasaray now defeating them twice in 2025-26.

After splashing around £450 million on new signings in the summer, Slot’s team were supposed to be a dominant European force.

But they have been beaten by Crystal Palace, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and recently Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Slot led the Reds to Premier League success in his first season, but the standards have dropped alarmingly this term.

The Dutchman will likely be sacked if he fail to deliver Champions League qualification this season.
