Jamie Carragher has lambasted Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt for repeating the same mistake during the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Red Devils were comfortably second best to Spurs at Old Trafford, even before being reduced to ten men.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring two minutes after kick off with a tap-in. Bruno Fernandes then received a red card jts before halftime following a high challenge on James Maddison.

The visitors dominated the second half, as goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke ensured they returned to north London with all three points.

Carragher slams Man United star De Ligt for repeated mistake

Carragher blamed De Ligt‘s poor positioning for the opening goal and criticised the Dutch international’s over-aggression during the first half in particular.

“I’ve noticed this about him and a lot of centre backs,” the pundit said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “I don’t understand why they don’t fill the space and come over.

“The striker behind him has nothing to do with him, that’s (Lisandro) Martinez’s job. If De Ligt goes over, Martinez moves across.

“In every situation of that first half; two massive chances and the goal, De Ligt – the player they have brought in for massive money – is completely out of position all the time.

“So he ends up having to go flying into challenges and then leaves himself in a situation where he can get yellow cards and red cards.”
