Leicester City have begun their search for a new manager after sacking Marti Cifuentes six months into his tenure, hours after Rebekah Vardy called a hypothetical Jamie Vardy player-manager return interesting during an Instagram Q&A.
The decision followed Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Oxford United, leaving City in mid-table with their lowest tally at this stage since 2007/08. The club said in a statement that the call was difficult, made in the best interests of Leicester, and they thanked Cifuentes. First-team coach Andy King will lead the team while a permanent appointment is sought.
Jamie Vardy, 39, left last summer after 13 years to join Cremonese. He made 500 appearances for Leicester and scored 200 goals, the final survivor of the 2016 title winners. Since moving to Serie A, he has scored five times.
Earlier on Saturday, Rebekah fielded questions about Leicester. Asked if the pair would return as player and manager, she said such a scenario would be interesting.
On whether he might move into management after retiring, she said it was extremely unlikely, suggesting he may lack the patience and joking about their busy family life.
She added that he still watches Leicester despite how painful it can be, and hinted there was more behind his departure, stressing the decision was not taken lightly and that he loves the supporters.
