The Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match ban after his red card in England’s 3-2 World Cup last-16 win over Mexico.

He was dismissed in the 54th minute for a heavy, uncontrolled tackle on Jesus Gallardo. FIFA announced on Thursday that the 23-year-old will serve two games, with the offence judged serious and therefore more than the standard one match.

He will miss the quarter-final against Norway on Saturday at 23:00. He would also be absent for a semi-final if the Three Lions progress.

England could turn to Djed Spence or Reece James to cover his absence. James, regularly injured, was still missing from training on Wednesday.

The tie comes against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
