Manchester United are long-time admirers of Jarrad Branthwaite, who has enjoyed a steady rise at Everton in recent years.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are preparing for life after Harry Maguire, whose contract at the Theatre of Dreams expires at the end of the season.

Recent reports suggest that the Premier League giants could offer the Englishman a new deal. However, Maguire is already in the twilight of his career and will have to be replaced soon.

United have to plan for the future

United also have to put succession plans in place for Luke Shaw, who is on the wrong side of 30 as well.

The Premier League giants invested heavily in the backline in the summer of 2024, bringing in Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui. Meanwhile, Ayden Heaven arrived from Arsenal in January this year.

However, with Lisandro Martinez struggling to stay fit of late, the Red Devils could be tempted to add more quality to their defence in the future.

Branthwaite was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, although a transfer failed to materialise. Recent reports suggest that United are preparing to return for the Englishman in January, but it now appears they could be in for disappointment.

Everton won’t let Branthwaite leave in January

According to TEAMtalk, Everton will not consider Branthwaite’s departure at the turn of the year. The Englishman remains sidelined by a hamstring injury since the start of the season, adding to speculation about his future.

However, he remains a key part of the Toffees’ plans, and the club is ready to rebuild the squad around him.

“Under manager David Moyes, Everton view Branthwaite as the cornerstone of their defensive rebuild. Sources close to the club reveal that securing him to a new contract – which was penned in July – was prioritised as the summer’s most critical piece of business.”

“Moyes, thrilled with the outcome, has publicly declared Branthwaite untouchable, intent on constructing the squad around the England international’s talents. This commitment comes despite ongoing injury woes that have tested the player’s resilience.”

The report adds that the 23 year old’s contract, which runs until 2030, is unlikely to include a release clause. It is believed that the Merseyside club values the player at £70 million.

United have previously seen several bids for the player rejected by Everton, but continue to monitor his situation. However, they may need to be patient in their pursuit of the Englishman.
