UEFA confirmed on Monday that Australian referee Jarred Gillett will take charge of Milan v Benfica at San Siro in matchday one of the Europa League league phase.

The 39-year-old is a regular in the Premier League, having already handled three matches this season, plus one in the English League Cup. He shares nationality with Benfica centre-back Alessandro Circati.

Last season Gillett oversaw 22 Premier League fixtures, and he was appointed to referee the play-off final for promotion to the English top flight, contested by Hull City and Middlesbrough.

In Italy he will be assisted by English duo Neil Davies and Nick Greenhalgh, with Tony Harrington as fourth official. Stuart Attwell will operate VAR, assisted by Poland’s Tomasz Kwiatkowski.

Despite officiating almost 90 Premier League games, this will be Gillett’s debut in European competition. He has not previously taken charge of Portuguese sides, has been an international referee since 2013, and also serves as a VAR.

Kick-off is at 20:00 on Wednesday 16 September at San Siro.
