On April 14th, in a move that sent shockwaves through the league, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano announced he would resign from his role, just five months after leading Inter Miami to the MLS Cup.
In a press release following the announcement, Mascherano explained his decision, all while thanking the fans and organization for his time at the club.
“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” he said.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments,” he continued.
“I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them,” Mascherano added.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the Club all the best moving forward. I have no doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future. Sending you all a big hug, and thank you for everything.”
Given Inter Miami’s history with previous managerial firings, it did appear that Mascherano may have been let go due to recent results.
However, according to a report by Michele Giannone from Apple TV, it seems Mascherano left voluntarily, taking the rest of his coaching staff with him, leaving the club blindsided.
In the meantime, while Miami searches for another full-time manager, current Sporting Director Guillermo Hoyos will take on the interim head coaching role, while Chief Soccer Officer Alberto Marrero will assume the role vacated by Hoyos.
The story is currently developing, and Inter Heron will be here with further updates.
