Jean-Paul Rostagni, former France and Monaco defender, dies aged 78 | OneFootball

According to Nice-Matin, former France international Jean-Paul Rostagni has died aged 78 after a long illness. He won 25 caps between 1969 and 1973, having come through at Cavigal.

Born in Drap, he broke through at Cavigal alongside close friends Jacky Rémond and Francis Camerini, all born in 1948. The young Nice team dominated the region, winning the South-East title for five years.

Rémond recalled they experienced everything together from youth to juniors before both joining AS Monaco. In the Principality, Rostagni played 124 matches from 1966 to 1970 and made his France debut in 1969.

Camerini said they had first been youth opponents in FSGT, then team-mates at Cavigal, later serving together at the Bataillon de Joinville and becoming junior, then senior, internationals. He described Rostagni as a skilful, upright full-back, intelligent, loyal and widely respected.

After leaving Monaco he represented Bordeaux, Paris-SG and Paris FC, finishing his professional career at OGC Nice from 1973 to 1975. Camerini added that Rostagni was a genuine OGC Nice supporter and often watched games with him from a box.

After retiring he coached Peymeinade. He lived in Cagnes-sur-Mer and wished to be buried in his home town, Drap.

Condolences were extended to his wife, Gisèle, his sons, Laurent and Luca, and his grandchildren.
